Overview

Mount Desert Island Ice Cream stands out as a gem in Portland, Maine’s vibrant food scene. Located at 51 Exchange St, this ice cream shop is more than just a place for a sweet treat—it’s a destination for those seeking unique and thoughtfully crafted frozen flavors. The shop embraces small-batch production and emphasizes quality ingredients, resulting in ice cream with a notably rich, creamy texture and a higher butterfat content, which ice cream lovers will appreciate.

The core experience here centers on exploration and variety. The menu’s highlight, the Ice Cream Flight, allows visitors to sample up to four distinct flavors in generous scoops. This approach is perfect for adventurous palates wanting to taste a curated range of creative options like the Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble, Lemon Poppy Jam, and the playful Butterbeer. Each flavor tells a story, whether capturing the essence of a summer pie or reinventing classic desserts like s’mores with their Metz Sugar Pill, a marshmallow base with graham cracker and hot fudge ripples.

Though the space is modest and seating limited, the atmosphere is warm and inviting with friendly, efficient counter service. Its downtown location makes it an accessible stop for families, tourists, and locals alike. The shop’s commitment to distinctive, sometimes unconventional flavors means it appeals to a broad audience—from kids drawn to fun tastes like Oreo and Butter Beer, to adults who appreciate sophisticated options such as Callebaut Chocolate or Salted Caramel.

Reviews highlight the authenticity and quality of the ice cream, often noting its satisfying chewiness and depth of flavor, even if some flavors may divide opinions. As one customer described, the thick, buttery mouthfeel sets it apart from more traditional, airy ice creams. This quality, coupled with the ever-evolving, creative menu, makes Mount Desert Island Ice Cream a standout choice for those in Portland craving more than the usual scoop.

Overall, Mount Desert Island Ice Cream delivers a refined, flavorful, and memorable ice cream experience in a simple, no-frills setting. It’s a must-visit for anyone eager to explore elevated frozen treats that celebrate bold combinations and craftsmanship in Maine’s Old Port district.

We went here with my friends to get ice cream. They are ice cream with fancy names. I would recommend to get the Dude and lemon poppy one. They are really good. The prices are also reasonable with less than $10.

Pretty good ice cream. Consistency is more chewy which is interesting. Sweet cream flavor wasn’t quite what I was looking for compared to others but wasn’t bad. Recommended for your ice cream fix tho.

Mount Desert Island Ice Cream has five shops that are mostly located in Portland but they also have a location in the District of Columbia and one location in Japan! We tried the ice cream at this location for the first time and it was so tasty! They pride themselves on making small batch, high quality ice cream with a high ratio of butterfat and low air whipped inside. You can tell that they care about their ice cream just by eating it. The flavors were all delicious, the atmosphere is small and simple. They don't list all of their flavors on their wall so if you really want to see what they have you're just going to have to go inside and check it out. The line gets long here quickly so the sooner you get here, the better. Service is counter service and was friendly and quick. If you're looking for some tasty and unique flavors in Portland, Maine, check this place out! My wife and I got the ice cream flight which consisted of your choice of 4 different flavors. They give big scoops for each flavor and the flight is only $9 so make sure you have someone to help share, or not! The flavors we got were, Metz Sugar Pill, Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble, Lemon Poppy Jam and Butterbeer. The Metz Sugar Pill was an "elevated" s'mores. It's a marshmallow ice cream base with bits of graham cracker and hot fudge ripple. The Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble was a blueberry and sour cream ice cream base with different sized bites of sugary crust inside. The Lemon Poppy Jam is a lemon and poppyseed ice cream base with raspberry jam ripple. And lastly the Butterbeer. It was hard to tell what was in this but we assumed it was a root beer and butterscotch ice cream. Of the four flavors that we had, I really liked the Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble the most. The flavor was rich with blueberries and a hint of sour cream and the crumble inside was soft and complemented the ice cream perfectly. Tasted like I was eating blueberry pie with ice cream. The Lemon Poppy Jam was also delicious and fresh tasting. The jam was plentiful and also complemented the ice cream well. The Metz Sugar Pill was a good take on s'mores and the ice cream tasted like it had some malt taste to it alongside the marshmallow flavor and I liked it a lot but I with there was a bit more graham cracker bits inside. Lastly, the Butterbeer was... Different. It mostly just tastes like root beer ice cream which wasn't bad but wasn't the Butterbeer I expected. I went to universal studios and tried Butterbeer from the Harry Potter themed part of the park and it tasted more like butterscotch. So if you're like me and expect that flavor, this ice cream is not that haha still good though and tasted like an ice cream float. This place has a while bunch of different flavors that I wanted to try but got full after sharing the sampler with my wife. Check out my pictures to see all the ice creams that they have as of posting this. Food - 5 ⭐ Atmosphere - 4.5 ⭐ Service - 5 ⭐ Overall - 5 ⭐ Follow me for more reviews across America

Tried this place for the first time as I explored downtown Portland and wow is it yummy! I got the salted caramel and it was some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had. I know others complained about not being able to sample but I personally like this policy. Cuts down on waste + keeps line moving quicker. Service was fast + friendly. I look forward to returning and trying other flavors.

They don’t have the basic flavors. They don’t do samples. Something about the environment. went with the blue berry option. The other was sorbet. Basil and blueberry. I like the flavor I choose. Could have used a bit more blue Berry.
